What are Poly Woven fabric?
Poly Woven Fabric are material woven from yarn made of plastic polymers. The more common being Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP). The plastic granules are melted and pulled into tempered yarn of suitable tensile strength, and woven into yards of fabric.
What makes woven fabric waterproof?
"Polypropylene fabric can be waterproof depending on its texture. If it has a regular texture without any coatings, then water can penetrate into the fabric and pass to the other side. But, if the fabric is embossed and/or finished with special hydrophobic chemicals, then it can be impermeable." ~ Youssef Moataz Kasim Mostafa
There are a few ways to be exact, more common being to laminate woven fabric with a thin layer of PP membrane. Heat melted PP gets extruded and quickly laminated onto the woven fabric. You can hardly notice the extra layer while it serves its purpose.
Others include polyurethane (PU) lamination, coating with vinyl and wax or oils.
How many types of waterproof woven fabric are there?
There are material such as:
- Laminated PP & PE woven fabric: PP/PE woven fabric laminated with PP membrane
- Waxed canvas of tight weave density
- Ripstop nylon fabric: light-weight nylon fabric with interwoven ripstop reinforcement threads in a crosshatch pattern, heat-sealed with PU.
- Terylene: a densely woven polyester fabric commonly applied in making sunshades, awnings and sails because of its waterproof quality.
- Laminated cotton /poplin: cotton or poplin laminated with fusible vinyl.
- Enameled cloth or Oil Cloth : A close-woven cotton duck or linen cloth with a coating of boiled linseed oil to make it waterproof.
